Wren supplies its units pre-built — rigid, fully assembled carcasses, not the flat-packs you build on site. For the fit, that matters in a few practical ways. A rigid carcass is stronger and squarer than a self-assembled one: it holds its shape when it's levelled and scribed to the wall, and it carries heavy stone and quartz worktops without flexing, so the finished run stays true. It also means far less time spent assembling boxes on your kitchen floor and more spent actually fitting — which usually makes for a tidier, quicker install.

The trade-off is handling and storage. Pre-built units arrive bigger and heavier than flat-packs, so they have to be moved carefully — in through the front door, along the hall and round the tight corners of a Blackburn terrace — without catching the finish, and they need somewhere clean and dry to sit before fit day. We plan where they'll be stored so they're not blocking the room you're still living in, and so nothing's left leaning where it can get knocked or damp. It's a small thing that keeps a Wren fit running smoothly.

Wren's design service is free and genuinely good: you'll sit with one of their designers, or use the online planner, and settle the layout, units, doors and worktops, with a 3D plan to look at. You order the kitchen directly from Wren and it's delivered to you. That design-and-supply side is theirs, and we'd never pretend otherwise.

Our side is the fitting — and the honest, practical advice that goes with it. When we measure up, before anything is ordered, we'll sense-check the Wren plan against your actual room: whether a tall unit will still clear the ceiling once the floor's levelled, where a worktop join is best placed, whether a door will foul a wall in a tight space. We're fitters, not designers, so we won't redraw your kitchen — but we'll flag anything that won't work in practice while there's still time to adjust the order. Before a single unit goes on the wall, we check your Wren delivery in against the order — and we do it the day it lands, while there's still time to fix anything. It's the same routine every time:

• Count everything off. Base, wall and tall units, doors, drawer fronts, the worktops, plinths, cornice, pelmet, end panels and the fiddly trims — all checked against your order, because it's the small end panel or filler strip that holds a fit up if it's missing.
• Check for transit damage. Pre-built units and stone worktops travel heavy; we look over corners, edges, door faces and any glass for knocks or scuffs before they go anywhere near the wall.
• Confirm the right items, the right handing. Doors hinged the correct side, the right style and colour, the right appliances — occasionally a supplier sends the wrong handing or a substituted part, and it's far better caught now than mid-fit.
• Flag anything missing or wrong straight away, so a replacement is on its way before fit day rather than discovered halfway through, when it stops the whole job.

We do this for you as a matter of course. It's dull and it's thorough, and it's the difference between a fit that runs to plan and one that stalls for a week waiting on a part.

Every kitchen runs to its own timetable, but a Wren fit usually follows the same shape. Once you've designed and ordered with Wren, the units typically take a few weeks to be made and delivered — and that wait happens before we start, so your old kitchen stays usable in the meantime. We line your delivery date up with your fitting dates so the kitchen arrives when we're ready for it: not so early it clutters your hallway for weeks, not so late it holds the job up.

From there a typical fit runs rip-out and first-fix, then units and worktops (stone tops are usually templated once the units are set, and fitted a few days later), then tiling, flooring, appliances and finishing. Most kitchens are a couple of weeks on site once work starts, depending on the spec and whether the layout's changing. We'll give you indicative dates on the visit and a firmer schedule before we lift a tool — realistic timings, not overnight promises. Wren can arrange fitting too, and plenty of people are happy going that way — this isn't about their fitting being poor. Using an independent local fitter just gives you a different set of things. You still get Wren's units and their free design; alongside them you get a local, family-run team who fits the kitchen and takes on the whole room around it — worktops, tiling, plumbing, electrics, flooring and decoration — as one job rather than several trades to line up yourself. You deal with the same two people throughout: one of us quotes it and one of us fits it, so there's a single point of contact and no being passed between a designer, a salesperson and a fitter who've never met.
