Loft Room Fit-Out and Finishing

Plenty of lofts get converted and then sit half-finished — boarded out, maybe, but a long way from a room you'd actually want to sleep or work in. That finishing is what we do. We take a loft that has already been converted and signed off and turn it into a proper room: flooring, eaves storage, plasterboard finishing, decoration and the built-ins that make the angles work.

To be completely clear up front: we don't do the conversion itself. The structural work — strengthening the joists, the dormer, the staircase and the building-control sign-off — is a specialist job that's done first, by others. We come in after that's complete and finish the room. If you're at the structural stage, get that done and signed off, and we'll take it from there.

The character of a loft room is also its challenge: sloping ceilings, low knee-walls, the awkward triangle of space down at the eaves. Left alone it's wasted; fitted properly it's some of the most useful storage in the house. We build into the eaves with access doors or drawers, run storage along the low walls, and shape everything to the slope so the room feels finished rather than full of dead corners. It's the same careful, scribe-to-fit approach as our fitted wardrobes, just working with a roofline instead of a flat wall.

A converted loft often comes to us as bare boards and plasterboard. We lay the floor, make good and finish the plasterboard, fit skirting and architrave to the angles, and decorate throughout, so it comes up to the same standard as the rest of the house rather than feeling like an afterthought stuck on top. All of it is fit-out and finishing within the existing, signed-off structure — we're not altering the roof or the floor structure.

Standard wardrobes don't fit under a slope, which is why the best loft storage is built in. We fit wardrobes and cupboards shaped to the angle of the roof, use the full height where the ceiling allows and tuck low storage in where it doesn't. The last layer is what makes a loft feel like a room and not an attic: good lighting that suits a low or sloped ceiling, sockets where you'll actually want them, and the trims and details that tie it together.
